Summary

SPORT© Prevention Plus Wellness™ (SPORT) is a brief, interactive program for children and adolescents that is designed to deter substance use and abuse and encourage moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.

Evidence

No peer-reviewed publications evaluating the effectiveness of the most recent version of this program were located.  Results from a 12-month follow-up in a randomized controlled trial of a previous version of SPORT demonstrated that participants had improvements in a number of target behaviors including alcohol use, risk and protective factors, cigarette use frequency, and cigarette initiation.

Components

The SPORT program can be administered in a group or one-on-one.  Participants begin by completing a self-administered survey that examines their health and fitness behaviors.   A personalized goal plan is derived from the survey, and this plan is designed to facilitate multiple behavior changes and enhance participant motivation.  SPORT is designed to target a variety of behaviors:

  • Achieve higher levels of participation in sports and other physical activities;
  • Eat healthier foods;
  • Cope constructively with stress management; and
  • Get adequate levels of sleep.

Participants are expected to avoid the use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illegal drugs.  Program components can be modified to accommodate the needs of the individual.

Previous Use

Implemented in 2002, SPORT and has been used by 2,500 participants in 10 different sites in the United States.

A recorded webinar training is included with the purchase of the SPORT program.  Additional training DVDs and online and on-site trainings are also available.  Please contact Dr. Werch for more information.
